Anyone with a retail business should know about point of purchase displays. You, as a consumer, already see these all the time, but you may not realize why they are placed where they are, and what they are meant to do. You know that your eyes are drawn towards these, but do you know why it is that you only see certain products in these displays? These are very useful for the smart retailer, and can help boost profits, even if just a little bit.

The point of sale display is meant to get the consumer to buy something. Stores use sales to bring customers in, but those retailers are hoping the customers will buy more than what is on sale to even out any losses. This is when point of purchase displays come into play. The items in them probably aren’t on sale, or if they are, the bargain is not that great. However, the display draws the eye, and consumers will see it where as they may pass up most other things on their way out with their sale items.

Point of purchase displays are not just meant to help boost impulse buying, they are also used by manufacturers to promote new things. If a company has a new product out, they can easily have someone in the store giving away samples, advertise on television, and put that produce on sale via coupon or special. However, the point of purchase displays will go a long way towards introducing the average customer to that new product. They may not buy it right away, but you know they see it, and that can lead to sales in the future.

The best point of purchase displays are bright and bold, and are hard to miss. They don’t have to be ugly or stick out like a sore thumb, but they should be different enough to draw the eye to them. They can be placed anywhere in the store, but the best place for point of purchase displays is the ends of isles, near registers, and other high traffic areas. If you place them in the back corner, some people will see them, but they won’t get the traffic they need to be effective. They have always been around, but are becoming even more important with so many shopping online. The art of grabbing the attention of the consumer is changing, and this is one thing you will probably see a lot of in the future.
