Behind the lines: An Interior Designer’s Services
The nature of an interior designer’s work is drawn from many disciplines. This is important in order to enhance their function, safety and aesthetics in whatever spaces they design. The main focus however of interior designers is how the different colors, textures and lighting as well as the space work and furniture work together to meet the occupant’s needs. As a result of this diversity, most interior designers have to work with architects, electricians and building contractors. What are some of the steps involved in the design process? The first step is called programming which involves determining the client’s needs and preferences. This requires meeting face to face and calculating the budget and the client’s wishes. In order to do this, he or she may inquire about the family’s habits and also taking stock of the existing furniture and equipment. Identifying potential problems and positive attributes is one of the interior design services offered at this stage. The next step is to formulate a design plan and the estimated costs. Computer-aided design is generally employed since it provides detailed sketches and can be used to develop a proposed design that can be easily revised. Once the design concept has been finalized, the designer will specify the materials, finishes and all furnishings required which include the artwork, lighting, furniture and the floor and wall coverings. The interior designer works with the project team to ensure that the proposed plan is implemented as it appears on the drawings. Often, it is the work of the interior designers to choose contractors and issue work contracts. The designer finally develops the project timeline ensuring the work is completed on time. Interior designer services are thus as diverse as their projects demand.
