What to do with your present home when you move abroad

It does not matter if you own your own home or are renting it. The important things to start making decisions about are your personal possessions. If you are leaving some possessions behind then you need a secure, dry place to keep them. Consider the options of leaving these in a storage facility or in a friend or family member's garage. Costs will play a big part in your decisions, like the monthly rentals of storage facilities. You might even need to purchase some replacement insurance, often available at the storage facility.

If you own your own home then you can choose to rent it out or choose to sell it. If it is a short-term move then renting it out is probably the best. For a permanent, or long-term, move then you may want to sell your present home and use the money to purchase in your new country.

Make decisions about your furniture and large items. Do you want to take it or leave it behind? This decision can be painful. Most people do not want to abandon furniture items that may have taken a long time to pay for. Your grandmother¡¯s table might make you cry when you consider selling it to a stranger. You might learn that many of your furniture, art and decorative items have direct links to your heart and emotions. If you start making these decision several weeks before you have to actually start packing, you will have time to change your mind once or twice. The earlier you do this, the less stress you will have when the actual moving time is near.

Once you have decided what to do about your home, you need to look into the services of a removal or courier firm. It will be a removal firm if you are moving furniture and a courier if you are only moving small items. Look for a removal firm that is of good reputation. In the United States, there are several international moving services. Look in the phone book.

Seek out people who have moved into your new country before and find out their experiences, both good and bad. Do not take one person's bad experience as the only reference point. Some people are naturally negative and would have a bad experience with a gorgeous sunset. Look for some who have moved successfully and are enjoying their new country. They will be happy to share their experiences and advice with you.

Choose a removal or courier company who will pack up your things as well as move them. Make sure that you or they make a complete inventory of everything they are carrying.

Keep copies of the inventory in a safe place (preferably on the Internet where you can get access to it and no-one else can change it). Do a Google search on "Internet document storage" (with quotes) and you will find many options to choose from. Research restrictions as to when your possessions can be moved to you. In China, for example, if you move possessions after the first six months they are all liable for tax, before that period only machines are liable.

Your preparation must be made weeks in advance. You need plenty of time to sort and remove the clutter you don¡¯t need anymore and to get ready to move. Give yourself plenty of time. Make sure that all the tasks of sorting your personal possessions and/or packing them is completed at least two days before they are being moved. Also make sure that you will have at least one full clear day after your packed possessions are moved to rest before starting your travel to your new home. Two would be better for your sanity.

Moving to another home, let alone another country, is one of the major stresses in a person¡¯s life. Moving to another country with all the new food, requirements, restrictions and manners has got to be highly stressful. Take time to take care of yourself.

Make sure that what you take with you is allowed to be taken into your new country. For example it is illegal to take a Bible into Saudi Arabia and if it is found it will be destroyed. Using this search term in Google¡¡±Saudi Arabia¡±+bibles (with the quotes), you can find many current resources that detail that country¡¯s attitude about bibles. Also be careful with ivory and coral products that are banned by international convention.

Before you actually move, there¡¯s lots of decisions to be made. Do you want to buy, rent or share? If you are a teacher or doctor in your new country, there may be accommodations provided with your new employment. Please be aware that this may mean, that in some countries such as communist or Islamic states, you are ¡°on call¡± or ¡°under surveillance¡± more than you may wish to be in your own home. Can you live with this?

Set yourself a budget and stick to it. If you want to purchase a new home, you may quickly decide that the purchase price is beyond your budget or that loans to purchase property are not available to foreigners. Give yourself a 10% allowance in case your original estimate of accommodation prices are too low.
