I am a cat lover. If you are also one you no exactly what I mean. I can sit and watch a cat for hours. Of course the cats I live with are the most beautiful and intelligent ones that were ever created, but I also enjoy watching other cats. You may notice I did not say the cats I own. I do not think it is possible to own a cat. They are simply too independent in nature. They choose to let us remain in the same space with them and I have no doubt they would leave in a second if they thought the neighbor would treat them better.

There are times when I cannot believe how life works out. Almost three years ago I was a social worker for a county government agency. My case load consisted of children with mental health needs that were placed in foster homes or residential treatment facilities. One of the foster homes I visited was located in the country. On my way to the home I passed a sign for kittens for sale. My husband and I had been talking about getting another cat. We had lived with an all black cat named Mr. Bub for seventeen years. We then adopted Willie, an eighteen month old Siamese, who had lived with us for a year. Mr Bub had passed away several months earlier and we were concerned that Willie was lonely during the day in the house by himself. When I arrived at the foster home I asked the foster mom if they knew the people next door that had the kittens for sale. She said that they did not know them very well. They had gotten off on the wrong foot when the neighbors moved in and their dog kept getting out and coming in the foster home’s yard and spooking their horses. She asked me why I wanted to know. I told her that they had a sign out that they have kittens for sale and I was interested in getting another cat. She told me that their cat had kittens five weeks ago and they were looking for a home for them. She told me that there was one that was perfect for me because it was mostly white with longer hair and they knew it would not make a good barn cat because it would be all matted and dirty. She took me out to the barn to show me the kittens. They were climbing on the hay bales and playing with each other. The white one did stand out as a cat that did not belong in a barn. The foster parent insisted I take her home with me. She had a carrier and gave me some of the food they had started them on.

On my way home I called my husband and let him know that I had a new member for our family. I explained about seeing the kittens for sale sign and how this lead to me getting the kitten.
