12-Volt Power Tools

What sort of tools are 12 volt power tools? These are minicraft precision tools that are used for small and light do-it-yourself work, hobbies, electronics and renovations. These tasks require a degree of accuracy and as a result, 12 volt power tools are considered the tools of choice. Heavy drilling and cutting tools cannot be used for the intricate jobs that require precision and minicrafts are ideal in this regard. These tools can either be corded or cordless. This means that they can also use batteries. Corded minicraft tools are powered by a permanent direct current motor of between 30 and 100 Watts operating from a transformer with an output of between 0-18 volts. The step-down transformer is connected to a standard 110v outlet.

From the above, you will immediately see the advantages of 12 volt power tools over the 110v larger rotary tools. These 12 volt miniatures are designed much lighter and slimmer making them much easier to use. In fact some of them, like the miniature rotary tool can be as small as a fountain pen – used for applications at your fingertips, literally. This gives you full control over small projects and your balance is greatly improved in a way that the larger tools would be hard to achieve with. In addition to their small size and weight, the fact that these tools operate at 12 volts means that they are safer to use and the risk of an electric shock is small and almost harmless in the event that it does occur. Since they use direct current rather than the more hazardous alternating current, this rectified voltage is less likely to cause any harm should a fault occur. Most 12 volt power tools also have an additional safety cut-off devise that automatically cuts power when the tool is over-loaded. When the temperature stabilizes, the cut-off devise is disengaged and the tool can be used. This safety precaution protects against damage to the tool and thus ensures that the tool has a longer life.

When buying 12 volt power tools, you will want to buy a transformer with a variable speed as well. A variable speed transformer will allow you to use all of your tools and thus enlarge your area of applications and usage. In addition, some tasks may require that a rotary tool have low speed while other tasks like engraving, cutting and precision drilling may require high speeds which the transformer can provide. 12 volt power tools come in all ranges and this will give you full flexibility. You will also discover that it is a joy to work with these miniature power tools.
