Growing mushrooms is easy, fun and reduces that produce expense admirably!

When you go to the grocery for weekly shopping, the produce aisle is bristling with an array of lovely vegetables and high prices. An adequate amount of fruits and veggies are essential to good health, so what can you do? If you're lucky enough to have a garden space, you can grow some of these yourself, thereby getting very fresh and tasty produce which also helps out on the food budget.

Few people think of growing one of the most popular produce items, mushrooms. You don't even need an outdoor garden. Mushrooms can be grown in a dark corner of the garage, or even in a closet – if such a prospect doesn't offend your sensibilities. Store purchased mushroom are quite expensive and you also have the problem of storage. Even storing them in a paper bag, one trick to making them last longer can result in a little waste if you don't use them promptly. Growing mushrooms solves the waste problem and you have the pick of nice fresh mushrooms for today's meal.

So how do you embark on growing mushrooms? Simple. Google 'growing mushrooms' and you'll see what I mean. There are many websites which sell mushroom growing kits, at very reasonable prices. What you get is a special type of soil, infused with mushroom spores. There's really not much to it besides setting up your growing site and waiting. Technically, mushrooms are not vegetables, they are fungi, which explains why you don't need direct sunlight. Mushrooms thrive in dark places.

Mushrooms are tasty additions to just about any dish. Omelets, pizzas, gravies, roasts, kebabs and salads are just a few of the common ways we use mushrooms. By growing mushrooms yourself, you can have the pick of the crop any day of the week. A very fresh mushroom is far superior, being firm and free of bruises.

If you find you can't use all of the mushrooms you've got in your patch, you can just allow them to grow. As the mushrooms get larger, they acquire a browner color and a more rustic appearance. Guess what? These are the very same mushrooms known as Cremini, which you see in the produce section at the store, which also carry a higher price than the white mushrooms. The Creminis are good for stuffing, in gravies and sliced for topping roasts.

If you really have a bumper crop, and you want to preserve those white mushrooms, pick and slice them, lay them on a cookie sheet and freeze. When frozen, pile them into a storage container. They're ready for use when you are. Frozen mushrooms maintain a good texture when thawed and are especially useful for sauteeing, pizzas and slipping into a soup pot or stew.

You can see the ease with which you can have fresh mushrooms that beat the expense and storage problems by growing mushrooms for your menus.
