Vicodin Addiction

Hydrocodone and paracetamol is a drug combination commonly prescribed as a pain relieving drug. You may have heard of it as Vicodin, its more well-known name. The hydrocodone in Vicodin works as a sedative while paracetamol is the pain-killing component. In the U.S., Vicodin is only available through prescription. It’s classified as a Schedule III drug, which means that it’s not as addictive as Schedule I and II drugs and it has an a legal medical use, but it’s regulated by the government because of its addictive properties. Vicodin has a low to moderate potential of physical dependence and a high potential of psychological addiction.

Vicodin addiction is a fairly common phenomenon in the U.S. and it has been publicized through figures like Eminem, who has spoken and rapped about his addiction to sleeping medication, and Dr. Gregory House, whose Vicodin addiction is a major plotline in House. The frequency of Vicodin addiction might be due to the fact that it’s more easily accessible than street drugs and its abuse is easily justified through its prescription. But Vicodin addiction isn’t necessarily less serious than addiction to drugs that don’t have accepted medical purposes—unfortunately, the legitimacy of Vicodin addiction might prevent victims from seeking help or their friends and family from seeking help for them.

However, once people suffering from Vicodin addiction do seek help, treatment is possible. Of course, it isn’t so easy—like with any other addictive drug, Vicodin addicts will have to endure physical symptoms as well as the mental aspect of those symptoms. During withdrawal they might experience things like headaches, nausea and fatigue as their bodies stop receiving the doses of Vicodin that they’ve become accustomed to. Patients also have to deal with their psychological need to take Vicodin.

Drug rehabilitation centers can help people with Vicodin addiction through their struggles. To treat withdrawal, patients can undergo a detox program that cleanses the body. In addition, counseling can help patients deal with emotional dependency on the drug and to get to the root of that dependency. Dealing with issues that contributed to the addiction can help address the addiction itself.

If you or someone you know is dealing with Vicodin addiction, there are many resources to turn to. There are websites that can educate you about the condition and how to get treatment, and there are hotlines to speak with people who can help you. Vicodin addiction is a serious issue and overcoming it is a big step that you don’t have to take alone.
