Win yourself a 19 inch monitor
No no, this isn't an internet giveaway. Not some dubious site that's trying to scam your personal info in order to reward you with a shot at an item - in this case a 19 inch monitor - then ruin your inbox with spam. This, instead, is my story of how I personally came to own a sparkling, new, Phillips 19 inch monitor for my desktop computer. It's one of my favorite stories because it involves gambling and booze, two of my favorite things. Back a couple of years ago I was at Foxwoods Resort and Casino with wife and her parents. They're great folks; he's a doctor and she's a nurse, they're generous and they love to have a good time. And their definition of "a good time" generally involves great food and either a craps or a blackjack table. Since they live out in California, all our previous gambling experience had either been in Las Vegas or at some of the Indian casinos out in Cali itself. These all have their charms. The fact that the Indian casinos, for example, are within an hour's drive of their beachside condo surely helps. And what is there to say about Vegas that hasn't already been said? It's a unique city offering a unique experience both in terms of gambling and other forms of entertainment. We've had a lot of fun. But this time, since they were visiting us in New York, we were gambling on the east coast. The wife and I generally stay away from Foxwoods and the other Connecticut casino, Mohegan Sun, since they're invariably packed and the stakes are usually higher than we like to play. But this was a special occasion, so we headed out to Foxwoods for a night of steak, lobster tail, and gambling. The dinner went well, but the gambling not so much. We bounced from blackjack table to blackjack table for several hours. Nobody could get a run going, with my father-in-law in particular taking it on the chin time after time. His response in these situations is always the same: press his bets harder and try to change the luck of the whole table. It only rarely works. So at the end of the night - about 2 am or so - we were all heading back to our rooms when I passed a $10 blackjack table. "What the hell?" I thought, and started playing. The rest of the family joined me. After a couple of lukewarm shooters, I got the dice myself. I've never had luck at craps, but something just clicked. I ended up throwing my point 12 times before crapping out, and my wife and I walked out of there up nearly $2500. My father in law was up five figures - close to 11k if I remember correctly. To celebrate, we ended up going shopping the next day. Part of the splurge was a bigscreen tv, and of course, my shiny 19 inch monitor.
