22 Research Tools You Will Need To Start Your Genealogy Project
When you go out to do research, be sure to bring along the following tools: 1. To-do lists (printed out by a computer program) 2. Analysis chart(s) 3. Time line chart(s) 4. Blank research log pages 5. Printed research logs (printed by a genealogy program). 6. Any old, hand-typed research logs of Civil searches, Church searches, Home searches, & Miscellaneous records searches. 7. Individual summaries for the people you are researching. 8. Surname research summaries. 9. Ancestor charts (and an extra chart or two to give away). 10. Family group sheets for each generation back to that ancestral family. 11. Miscellaneous family group sheets for other families in that geographic area with that surname. For example: cousins, neighbors, and identified family friends. 12. Copies of past finds that you may need to consult while searching. 13. Reference materials. 14. List of the alternative spellings for the surname(s). 15. Charts of the jurisdictional histories for their counties of residence. 16. Geographical list of all the localities where your ancestors lived (including the time range for their residence in that county). 17. Alphabetical list of all the other surnames you are researching in that area. 18. Maps. 19. Relationship calculation chart. 20. List of state postal codes and other abbreviations you may use in your handwritten notes. 21. Driving directions to the places I am going. 22. The LDS Research Outline for that geographic area (some can be printed online).
