Plastic surgery risks

Plastic surgery risks vary from procedure to procedure. With some, such as the lancing of a mole or cyst, there is very little risk. With other procedures - breast augmentation and liposuction to name two - there is more risk. The more complex the procedure gets, the more risk there will be during and after.

Plastic surgery risks run the gamut from simple swelling all the way to necrosis, or tissue death at the spot. That's relatively rare, however. What's more common is a sensation of numbness, or a loss of sensation all-together at the spot of the incision. However even in these cases any permanent damage is uncommon.

What is most common, especially after breast surgeries, is a loss of sensation in the nipple. This can occur in over half of all breast surgeries, but are most common on breast reduction surgeries. Among plastic surgery risks, this is one you'll see most often.

When it comes to tummy tucks, the most common of plastic surgery risks is seroma, or a collection of watery body fluids that can occur. It's such a frequent occurrence that many surgeons will insert a drain to prevent it during the operation.

The history of plastic surgery is longer than one would think, dating back all the way to the ancient Egyptians. It was the twentiety century, however, that saw the specialty thunder forward with leaps and bounds, most especially in the United States. However, the rest of the world isn't far behind and not everywhere has the series of regulations and precautions that you'll find stateside.

A particularly glaring example of plastic surgery risks comes in the story of former Miss Argentina Solange Magnano, who died during routine plastic surgery. She was getting what the British euphemistically call a "bum lift" - a gluteoplasty - when liquid injected into her during the procedure managed to travel to her heart and lungs. She eventually died of a pulmonary embolism, or a blockage of the arteries in her lungs. She's survived by seven year old twins.

While stories like Magnano's are rare, the worst can and does sometimes happen when talking about something as invasive as cutting into live tissue. So if you're planning on having plastic surgery done, make sure you take precautions and choose the right doctor, one with experience and integrity. If you've done that, you've greatly lowered your plastic surgery risks from the start.
