Database Connectivity by use of Servlets

More and more databases are driving the web today. It is hard to find a professional website today that does not employ some sort of database connectivity. While this usually exerts a heavy penalty on the performance, it is still too useful to let go. There are a number of relational databases that are used to manipulate databases, the most common being the Structured Query Language (SQL). The Java database connectivity is also an excellent solution to webmasters who need back-end databases to be hooked to their web sites and who need this to be done in an elegant-looking interface. This article will discuss how Java servlets can offer such connectivity on say a web site.

One big advantage of using Java databases connectivity via servlets is that open database connections can be maintained. This means that a Java script does not need to reestablish a connection for every invocation. Another advantage of Java database connectivity API is database-independent. Servlets written for one database can be used to call a completely different database, with a line or two of code modification or simply by changing file properties. This means that a Java database servlet written for a Sybase database can be used to access an Oracle database and even data sources like Microsoft Access. The incorporation of middle tier or middleware in a Java database also means that business logic can be included in database making such tasks as placement and order a lot simpler and safer. Middle tier helps connect an endpoint like a servlet to a database and along the way adds the business logic abstract.

The importance of middleware in a Java database can be shown by what happens when a client application places an order. Under normal circumstances, the application will connect directly to the server and store the orders and alter the fields to reflect this change. If the database were to be moved to different machine or altered internally, the client may break and records may be changed without payments being received first or valid entries may be rejected. On the other hand, with middleware being present, information about the order is accepted and can be verified before being entered into the database. Any change to the database will therefore not affect the client. The same appearance is presented to the client even when there is file order log replacement. On slow networks, middleware can dramatically improve bandwidth utilization since the client does not need to have back-and-forth communication with the Java database server. On the web, the middleware is often implemented by servlets using HTML forms and with the above-mentioned benefits.
