Nowadays, printers are cheaper than ever. Rather than ordering their custom printing out, a lot of companies prefer to print in office. After all, you can do commercial printing with almost flawless quality on a 200 or 300 dollar printer! Nonetheless, traditional custom printers are still useful for a lot of needs. Recently, in fact, we switched a lot of our custom business printing to an independent contractor. You see, even with the technology available to us in house, it still is a more economical way to do things.
You see, the thing about most commercial printers is, although the printer costs very little, the ink is outrageously expensive. One of my friends calculated that, ounce for ounce, some printer cartridge inks cost more than gold! By ordering your print jobs out to a custom printing house, you get to take advantage of their big commercial printers. Typically, they can print copies cheaper for a lot less money than you can, and they can pass these savings on to you. In addition, the quality is often quite a bit better. For mass mailings it might not matter that much, but custom printing can come in handy for magazines, certificates, and business brochures for exclusive clientele. Of course, for custom printed shirts we always shop the work out. Our custom screen printing project was a brief and miserable failure. One of the shop guys insisted that he could set it up for almost nothing, but the results were not satisfying. He was using a pretty low-tech solution for custom printing, one involving glue as a way to set the images. Although it worked for the first few shirts, the design tended to degrade with every subsequent printing. Needless to say, if we were printing 200 or 300 shirts, it wouldn't do at all! Of course, custom printing is not a great solution for every project. Usually, if you are doing a small number of mailings, it makes sense to invest in equipment you need to do it in-house. After all, with the cost of labor, you really aren't saving any money unless you are farming out big jobs. Still, even for a company with limited printing needs, it still makes sense to get jobs done by a Kinko's now and then. They tend to be a great solution if you have a rush job that you need done quickly and flawlessly.
