Up until recently, I had no idea that I didn't know how to make a brochure. You see, I didn't know that there was anything to know about it at all. I had never really thought about the finer points of brochure design. I have always had a pretty simple, functional approach to reports. I did very well in English in college, and enjoy writing as a spare time hobby. Through it all, my penchant for straightforward, simple communication has done me well.

I figured that this was probably the best approach to brochure design as well. After all, what is better than a content rich, well written source of information? I had seen some fancy trifold brochures before, but I didn't feel that that was really necessary to get my point across. As a business management company, we want people to see us as practical people

Nonetheless, after a few conferences it was clear that our brochure design was failing. Not only had we not scared up any new business, but people didn't seem to really care about our brochures at all. They would hold onto them politely until we were out of sight, maybe open them up for a second, and then discard them. I thought, for a moment, that perhaps the text was too small, or the font was not very readable. However, after experimenting with this, I realize there is more to it. My whole brochure design strategy was off.

I decided that I would try out a professional design brochure layout business. After all, I had nothing to lose. I looked at some of their brochure designs, and they seemed to have a pretty good approach. It was much different than what I liked to do with my own layout. Rather than focusing on packing as much information as possible in, their brochure designs tried to catch the eye. I never thought about brochure as a technique in advertising, although I realized that they were there to get people excited about our business.

Once we got the new designs, however, I was pretty happy with them. Although it was unfortunate not to be able to use my own designs, I quickly got over it. The company had well-designed brochures, and they seemed to immediately get some attention. They had neat graphics, funky fonts, and a good multicolored look to them. All in all, they were pretty nice. Business has picked up in the last few months. I don't know how much of it has to do with the brochures, but surely some of it does.
