The Work of an Accessory Designer
You have probably not heard of an accessory designer, but if you have then you have an idea of what they do. An accessory designer conceptualizes and creates designs for such things as jewelry, handbags, hats, shoes, belts, ties and other things that go with clothing. In most cases, they specialize in a specific line of accessories as well as their target clients, whether they are men, women or kids. This means that accessory designers must stay in touch with current trends in their own fields and also within apparel and fabric markets if they are to come up with creative pieces that complement the styles that are in the market. You can be an accessory designer regardless of where you live, past experiences or your educational background. This is the beauty of the industry. All you have to do if you live in a small town is to simply open or start a home business and sell your designs online. A big city like New York offers more opportunities in this lucrative business as well. Another benefit of venturing into the accessory designing field is the little investment that is required to start out. In most cases, your imagination and ability to conceptualize will be your selling points and with a little investment in starting a website you can be in business in no time. Think also of ideas to start that I call ‘piggyback’ ideas. These may include complementing your ideas with other products such as party items, candles, cosmetics, fancy stationery and the like. There is a myth most believe that to become an accessory designer, you need a design degree. However, I say to you, this is an absolute no. If you have creativity and a good use of your fingers, you have the potential of becoming an accessory designer. All you need are learnable skills and these can be learned by attending seminars, taking online courses and of course, as you go along. Acquiring a marketing vision is also a good idea for an accessory designer since one will be doing a lot of marketing to sell their vision and make a sale. They also need to collaborate with fashion designers and create accent pieces that will go along with the clothes. Accessory designer salaries vary greatly based on location, industry and experience. Most however work independently and thus define their salaries. Apart from the money, accessory designers make the world a beautiful place, one bead at a time.
