New bathroom flooring – a weekend DIY project - works wonders for an outdated bathroom

Come springtime, that old 'spring cleaning' mindset has us looking for ways to spruce up our homes. After scrubbing the bathroom walls, you may still end up with an old, tired looking bathroom.

So what's wrong with this picture? It needs a change and your mind may wander in the direction of a remodel, not knowing what else might help. A complete bathroom makeover can prove to be a costly and time consuming project. However, if you analyze what dissatisfies you most about the appearance, creating a fresh look may be far simpler than you'd imagine.

It's probably been a few years since those walls have seen a fresh coat of paint. It might be ten years since that vinyl bathroom flooring was installed. No matter how perfect the design seemed a decade ago, it probably doesn't hold your favor in quite the same way. Color preferences and decorating schemes change from year to year, even if you're not an avid follower of interior design.

Installing new bathroom flooring is one of the least expensive and attractive ways to update a bathroom, without doing an entire, costly makeover.

If you have an older home, it's possible you have original linoleum bathroom flooring, which has chips and cracks and has yellowed. Up to now, you may have hidden the poor condition with bright, modern throw rugs. However, washing linoleum floors is a pain, tearing up your mop, while never getting really clean. Scraping up that linoleum and replacing it with new vinyl bathroom flooring is probably the most inexpensive ways to give your bathroom a fresh and attractive look. Vinyl sheeting comes in hundreds of designs and colors and is a quick job. When you've removed the linoleum, use a power sander to give the base flooring a smooth surface and apply self-adhesive vinyl flooring.

Planked, tongue-in-groove wood flooring is another inexpensive option, sold in boxes of 15-25 square feet. It takes little to cover the average bathroom. Ask your home improvement clerk about types which stand up to bathroom moisture, or, alternatively, a finish which you can apply after installation that will protect your new bathroom flooring. This type of flooring is exceptionally easy to clean and gives you a rich and contemporary look.

You may think that bathroom flooring tiles are out of the question, due to the expense and level of skill required to install them. Even if you choose hand painted tiles, placed in an alternating pattern of plain and decorated tiles, the square footage involved keeps the cost down, while creating a low-maintenance floor that remains beautiful for many years. Get a book on floor tile installation from the library, or pick one up at the DIY center. Although tile installation requires a bit more patience and attention to detail, it's certainly a doable project. This may be a two-weekend project: one to reinforce the sub-flooring and the next to cut, fit and grout the tiles.

The easiest, quickest and least expensive flooring option is to install plush carpeting made for use in bathrooms.
