The best of Hawaii Fishing

The 50th state is, by many accounts, the most beautiful. While I won’t pass judgement on that - it's a personal thing, after all - I will say that Hawaii fishing offers a diversity of targets and styles that's unmatched anywhere else in the US. Its location is obviously unique, the islands sitting, as they do, at the convergence of the trade winds as well as several different currents. This causes there to be bountiful fishing for everyone from the absolute novice to the prize-catching trophy fisherman.

If you're not an "extreme" fisherman, your best bet is to jump on a group charter and go out on the waves to fish for whatever the crew suggest. The waters around Hawaii are rich with coral reefs, which attract everything from the Reef Triggerfish - the state fish - to the bull shark.

Small fish like the clownfish are also easily found, as are Chilean seabass, and dozens of other beautiful, small and tasty fish.

If you're the more adventuresome type, then I'd suggest targeting some of the sportfish around Hawaii. Hawaii fishing is, in some ways, the home of sportfishing in the pacific, which specific charters designed to go after any of the numerous big fish in the blue waters off coast.

The sailfish is probably the most spectacular, with its giant and distinctive top fin. The swordfish is its distant cousin, and has the distinct jaw that makes it one of the great prizes of Hawaii fishing, as well as a unique and top-notch predator. If you're going after either of these two, make sure you have an experienced guide/fisherman with you, as they're not for beginners. Either could very easily hurt you if you're unprepared for their strength and ferocity.

The prize of Hawaii fishing, though, is the Thunnus orientalis, or "Pacific Bluefin Tuna." These giants can reach 1200 pounds, and their meat is among the most succulent in the world. It is prized all over the world for Ahi sushi and sashimi, and one Bluefin can bring thousands of dollars to the lucky fisherman in the markets of Tokyo of San Francisco. Just be aware, though, that if you hook one of these bad boys, you're in for a long fight. The type of fight that Hemingway wrote books about!

So enjoy your Hawaii fishing trip, whichever level of adventure it may be that you decide upon. The 50th state has it all - all you need to do is look hard enough to find it!
