Moving Abroad For Virgin Buyers

Are you thinking about moving abroad and experiencing the real excitement and adventure of wrapping yourself in new cultures, new food, new surroundings? Perhaps the company you work for has offered you a post in a far off land. It may seem like a dream come true right now¡a fantasy from hundreds of movies. Stop and take a deep breath. You need to consider some definite realities of the new opportunity before you actually do it and possibly turn your adventure into a nightmare.

So make a visit to see what the reality is of the new country. Do not simply take a company tour and accept that at face value. Go shopping and see what it will be like to go out and buy fruit and vegetables. If you have a favorite brand of coffee or tea then see if you can get it locally. If you cannot purchase your normal brand then try the local brand to see if that is a good substitute. It is great in the center of a city but what about in the suburbs or where the ex-pats (ex-patriots) are living? Can you get everything you need to make a new home there?

Research the offered accommodation to see if it is acceptable in terms of security, cleanliness and fittings. A good lock on your front door and secure windows can do a great deal for your peace of mind when you are out at work all day.

Whatever you do, do not commit yourself to a course of action without a good knowledge of what you are letting yourself in for. This is of major importance. It may be great idea to travel and find yourself in a new country, but, if you are the only foreigner in charge of an office, or factory in a strange city then it may be very lonely. Choose your companions carefully. If your office friends or business associates are heavy partiers¡wanting only to drink their way round the city¡that may not help your reputation with the locals, or do much to get to know the city or the country you are in.

Take the time to research the Internet. Firstly look into any ex-pat web sites for the country and maybe even in the city you are going to. If there is anyone who can offer help and advice it is a real asset. The British ¡°Daily Telegraph¡± for example offers a service for ex-pats, listing contacts in countries who will help in their spare time. It is well worth checking out international newspapers based in your own country for their international links. A network of people already in your future situation will be a valuable resource, both before you actually leave your home and after you get to the new one.

Check out your government's web sites. For the UK, you will find that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has a lot of information that will help you. In the US, look for the web sites for the specific embassies that will give you the information you need about their countries. A little Internet searching will be helpful in your search. If you live in a city large enough to have embassies, actually go there for current information about their countries.

Do not neglect all health recommendations for travelers, especially for diseases like malaria (that is recurring) and Japanese Encephalitis (that can be fatal). Basic things like the purity of the water should never be neglected. Our doctor warned us on a visit to Mumbai in India to keep our mouths shut in the shower and not let our flannels, or wash cloths, if you are in the USA, touch our lips as the water was so polluted. Medically you could find that you are hit by influenza as the common type in your new country may be totally different to the type in your country.

Be prepared to face and cope with a different culture. Even going from the US to the UK or vice versa can be a culture shock. If you know someone that has made the transition to your new culture, then ask if they will give you advice and pointers about some problems they had when they moved. They may even be able to point you to a friend or family member in your new location who can help you. So talk to your friends and family. If you are moving with your company then find out if anyone you know has been in your destination country before.

The more you research, the more you know and the more likely you are to have a successful move.
