How to and why you write a cover letter for a resume

You've been unemployed far too long. Today, your job search has finally uncovered the perfect job, and now its time to apply. The listing says, 'Send your resume to ...' You've prepared that resume meticulously. It's all ready. All you have left to do is write your cover letter and send it off with your resume attached.

Writing a cover letter for a resume is as important as the resume itself. In your cover letter, you will introduce yourself. You'll tell the employer how pleased you were to find that the company has an opening. Then, in just one to three short paragraphs, you'll tell the employer why you think your education and experience makes you a perfect match. By the conclusion of your letter, if you've done a good job, the employer will be sold on your candidacy and that email or call, inviting you to an interview, will follow. This is the perfect scenario, how you want this job application to work out, and it will. A cover letter, properly written, could just make the difference.

Writing a cover letter for a resume is an exercise in both your salesmanship and restraint. Hiring managers read those cover letters - if they're short and to the point. If your cover letter works, it has worked because it has helped the hiring manager determine if your resume is worth inspection. The cover letter must be provocative.

Unlike a sales job where you have to tell the customer what they need, you don't need to tell the hiring manger what he wants. Assume he knows. Instead, a cover letter for a resume should succinctly state how you and your qualifications will answer to his needs. Start by telling the hiring manager that you believe he'll find you have all of the qualifications required for the job. Tell him you did the same work at company X, Y and Z. If your experience is recent, tell him so. Avoid the details of the work you've done. Your resume has all the details. If the cover letter works, it will lead the hiring manager to read your resume. In your cover letter, summarize your work history into a few short sentences. If you've worked for prestigious companies, don't hesitate to mention them.

A cover letter for a resume is the first impression you're going to make on the hiring manager. The words you choose and how you express yourself, will tell the hiring manager something about you, about your style, your enthusiasm and your attitude. Don't be overly solicitous. Don't grovel or beg. The hiring manager knows how important it is for you to win the job. End by telling the hiring manger you look forward to hearing from him and end the letter professionally. Write the cover letter with all sincerity. A cover letter for a resume, properly written, can be the key that unlocks the door to a job.
