Renting A Home abroad

This would seem to be the best way to get your own home. You can often choose between serviced, furnished, or unfurnished. The options of serviced or furnished apartments are probably best for a short-term stay. Unfurnished is the best in the long term because you have a lower monthly rental but you will have to purchase your own furniture and fittings or bring them in from your home country.

Take the time to study where the ex-pats are living. If there are numbers of them in a certain area then there are obvious advantages in joining them, but you may lose out on getting close to the local people. If you have children with you, finding the location of a good international school would be of major concern. The ex-pats will be a goldmine of information that will make your settling in easier and less stressful.

Find out what areas of the city are bad for crime or where you will be in danger walking around after dark. Every city, no matter how nice it appears, has distinct crime areas. So, ¡°be careful out there.¡±

Remember you are a guest in your new city. You will have to adapt to their culture and customs. Very often you will be seen as a welcomed influence, bringing skills, money, new culture and information into the local environment. A simple request for help can bring an avalanche of assistance from local people who will be delighted to meet you and to help you.

Look for a Realtor or estate agent to find you a property, but please make sure in advance that you know how much they are going to charge. In China, for example, the going rate is for the Realtor to charge one month's rent for their services. When you realize that you will have to put down a deposit of one month's rent and often pay twelve month's rent in advance it becomes an expensive luxury.

Make sure you have a translator and a lawyer who can go through the lease of any property. It is no good renting a property, for example, expecting guests to come from your home country for a visit and then find out that your lease does not allow you to have visitors.
