The first rule is to get a copy of the business card from your hotel or apartment so you can give it to a taxi driver when you want to go home. Get a local person to write out the name and address of your new home on a piece of paper so you can get back there after shopping or sightseeing. Make copies so you always have one with you.

Taxis are for the rich people in most countries. They are expensive for single trips, but they can be hired for the day, which can be cheaper. If you can find taxi drivers who speak English, you have just struck gold. They are a very worthwhile resource as your own local travel agent. They have lots of local knowledge to share and will often talk very freely about local sights, customs, the best place to shop or eat, etc.

Buses will often be crowded and noisy, but it is the best place to meet people who are interested in foreigners. Often you will be asked a few basic questions by people who simply want to know if they can be understood in the English they have been taught. Please be aware that the limit of their English may be what they have already said, so do not embarrass them unnecessarily.

Train journeys must be planned in advance. Do not assume that what you were used to in your former country applies in your new one. Please remember that train journeys in India or China can be over 24 hours in duration. We were once offered a trip in China taking 60 hours, so we took a 4? hour flight instead. It is vitally important to get information about the food on the train, particularly if it is safe to be eaten. Remember that bananas or any other fruit that has to be peeled are very safe, so make use of them. It might be a good idea to carry some food of your own on the train, including bottled water.

Flying in large countries like Australia, China, Canada, Russia and the USA is often a necessity and not a luxury unless you are deliberately taking a train through the Rockies, the Trans-Siberian Railway or the new train from Beijing to Lhasa. Travel is exciting but visas and injections are often the downside. Please remember that there may be different health risks in different areas of a large country so research everything and have a healthy trip. Your enjoyment of such trips is really based on the depth and accuracy of your personal research.
